The multi-micron SOI platform offers numerous advantages for PICs such as low waveguide losses, high power handling, polarization independence, minimal phase errors, and ultra-broadband edge-integrated lasers. This presentation will explore these platform benefits and highlight the unique and differentiating solutions achieved in the application areas of biosensor wearables and defense. We will also discuss recent advancements in high-volume scaling, including demonstrations of high-performance lasers and ultra-compact laser arrays utilizing micro-transfer printing, photonic-electronic 3D integration, and an emerging commercial foundry PDK offering. Finally, we will share lessons learned in the commercialization of biosensor wearables using silicon photonics.
