Current applications such as 6G or Artificial Intelligence computation are demanding electrical interfaces with increasingly high bandwidth, to reach data rates in the order of 1 Tbps. However, the transmission of high-speed electrical signals suffers high transmission losses. RF Photonics addresses this challenge by optical distribution of signals, bringing additional advantages such as reconfigurable signal processing in the optical domain. Photonic Integrated Circuits allow all these functions to be carried on a chip, adding to the advantages a reduction in the size, weight and power consumption, key for aerospace applications. Photonic hybrid integration promises that the best technology platform is used for each function while keeping the chip-scale form factor.
